October 8th and 9th 2016 marked the dates of the Bass Pro Shops Big Bass Tour presented by Huk Performance Fishing on Lake Conroe, Texas. It was originally scheduled to be held in March, but due to the flooding Texas was experiencing at that time, we had to wait almost a whole year to fish the event!

We drove down to Montgomery that Friday morning to do a little pre-fishing and be there in time for registration. Luckily we were staying at a hotel nearby, which was extremely convenient.  They also had the best coffee in the mornings which is rare – who needs Starbucks when you can get free hotel coffee that actually tastes good? (Maxwell House Colombian Dark Roast – give it a try)

We met the greatest people while we were at Papa’s on the Lake where the weigh-ins were taking place. They were all there of course because they were helping to run the sponsor booths and put the event on. But they are truly some of the greatest, most genuine people you’ll ever meet - you know who you are. 😉  We have our Pops to thank for getting us involved in this though, he’s the one who’s been doing it for years and cultivating these relationships.

6:45am was lines in and it was on. We caught quite a few, but unfortunately none were worthy of a Big Bass Trophy this go-round. It was a good time though and a great experience just being able to fish alongside some really great anglers.  Charlie Michalak took the lead with a 9.16 bass on Saturday and never looked back.  He ended up hanging on to the lead for the entire event. So congrats, Charlie, for winning the Big Bass Tour and a new 2016 Nitro Z18 with a Mercury 150HP ProXS motor!

We are looking forward to the 2017 Big Bass Tour which will take us right back to Lake Conroe on March 4th and 5th! And then again on March 24th – 26th for the Bassmaster Classic.
